Abbey House is a detached stone village property believed to date back to the 1850’s and was probably built for a manager or engineer employed by the Ironstone Company who were extracting the mineral deposits in Rosedale. At the time of the property’s construction, the old Priory (which was established in 1154), was still fairly intact and this provided a ready source of cut, dressed stone with which to build Abbey House along with several other properties in the village. Today, all that is left of the Priory is the stairway turret immediately behind Abbey House.
